EDITION 01: CHRISTCHURCH, JUNE 2026

MORE THAN AN EVENT SERIES

Turning shared knowledge into stronger reading outcomes.

Building capability. Strengthening libraries. Growing readers.

Wheelers Insights is Wheelers’ professional learning, capability-building and knowledge-sharing platform, created to help librarians, educators, literacy professionals and others working directly with readers turn evidence, experience and ideas into stronger reading outcomes.

We bring together researchers, authors, educators, librarians and sector voices to explore important issues, share different perspectives and connect ideas with practical application — then extend those conversations through events, webinars, papers, curated collections and ongoing professional learning.

Because good ideas should not disappear when the event ends.

Why Wheelers Insights?

Supporting libraries beyond book supply

Being a long-term partner to schools and libraries means contributing more than great collections and reliable service. Wheelers Insights is one way Wheelers invests back into the sector — supporting the capability, confidence and connectedness of the people who help readers thrive.

It also keeps Wheelers listening. Regular engagement with practitioners, researchers and educators helps us stay connected to emerging needs and allows current thinking to inform our collections, advisory services and customer experience.

FROM EDITION 01

Getting Boys Reading

Edition 01 brought together expertise in neuroscience, education, writing and frontline library practice — connecting research and fresh perspectives with the experiences of people helping young readers every day.

Keynote speaker Nathan Wallis, neuroscience educator, explored how boys learn, connect and engage. He was joined by Alan Dingley, Library Manager at Freyberg High School and former Te Awhi Rito New Zealand Reading Ambassador, and David Riley, children’s author and educator, bringing perspectives grounded in neuroscience, education, writing and frontline library practice.

The conversations were hosted by Rosemary Tisdall, Wheelers Children’s and Young Adult Selector, whose experience includes the National Library and judging the New Zealand Book Awards. Local practitioner perspectives came from Sally Brown of Riccarton High School in Ōtautahi Christchurch and Catherine Ross, Director of Library at Auckland Grammar School, in Tāmaki Makaurau Auckland.

Together with participating librarians and educators, they explored the conditions, choices and relationships that can help pre-teen and teenage boys engage more deeply with reading.
